Better Off Dead, by H. P. Mallory
I know I've been reading a lot lately. I guess with Jaiden gone all day, I found I have more time for reading.
Here's yet another book I received free from Bookbub.com. It's probably one of the craziest books I've read in a while. It's part mystery, part thriller, part romance, part comedy all rolled up into one package. There really isn't a dull spot in this book.
Lily Harper's life ends in a car accident at the beginning of the story. Where we learn she wasn't supposed to die, just be scared into not talking on her phone and driving. But her Guardian Angel, Bill apparently was too busy fooling around to save her life. So Afterlife Enterprises has decided to give her another chance at life, as long as she works for them as a soul retriever. Rescuing good souls from Hell that were placed there by mistake after a Y2K mix up(apparently they were affected even though everyone on Earth was not). They give her a new body, name, car, place to live, but other then handing her a copy of Dante's Inferno as a guide, they neglect any training. How is she suppose to rescue souls from demons in Hell without getting herself killed...again.
Lily's character irritated me in the beginning of this book with her whining and self pity. But honestly who wouldn't whine about dying early on in your life. As the story goes on you watch her find her courage, self confidence and strength, as well as a gorgeous Celt willing to train her. In the end you really start rooting for her and hope she can save the trapped souls as well as herself.
Bill reminds me of John Leguizamo's character, the Violator in the movie Spawn. Except he's one of the good guys, or at least working for the good guys, lol. He's a philandering, recovering alcoholic with an extremely crude sense of humor. Though as the story goes on he starts to grow on you and you see behind his crude humor, he really does care what happens to Lily.
There's an odd mismatched set of characters in this book that strangely seems to work, while making you laugh so hard the book will keep you in stitches. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and just started reading the second book in this series. I can't wait to see what else is in store for Lily Harper.
Book #2: The Underground City

Book #2: The Underground City
Heros are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with.
