Hotdog Water Rice or Omurice?
Honestly, I agree with you, this title sounds terrifying. No, I don't boil regular hot dogs. I'm sorry, but if you do, you might be a psychopath, lol, just kidding, maybe... A few friends introduced me to the Japanese concept of not wasting food called Monttainai. It basically translates to 'What a waste.' I have quite a few recipes for using up things like milk pulp or just leftover food. The same friends asked me what I make with the hot dog brine from my vegan hot dog recipe? Actually, the only thing I could think of was Omurice, lol. 😆
It's definitely a type of comfort food in Japan where an omelet is stuffed with rice cooked in broth with ketchup, soy sauce, and onions... yep, it's my hotdog brine, lol. It might sound odd, but it's strangely addictive. By US standards, it's not really that bad, especially for breakfast. Some of my Korean friends swear this originated in Korea first. I have no idea. The internet claims it started in Japan, but it is eaten more in Korea. 😉 This is a recipe that my son created based on his favorite things from other recipes. He is helping me make this since this is his recipe, and I broke my left arm and twisted my right arm messing around on my bike.

Omurice
For The Fried Rice
1 tbsp of Cold Pressed Peanut Oil
4 pieces of cooked crispy bacon, finely chopped (I don't eat bacon anymore, but this can be any meat or meat substitute; I used TVP reconstituted in beef broth )
1 onion, chopped
1/4 cup carrots, cubed
1 poblano pepper, chopped, or use your favorite type
1 cup of cremini mushrooms, or your favorite type
1 1/2 cups rice cooked in the leftover hot dog brine, brine recipe is in my hot dog recipe post linked below(chilled overnight in the fridge)
2 tsp mushroom soy sauce
1 tsp ketchup + more to garnish
Makes 4 servings
For Each Omelet
1 tbsp butter
2 large eggs
2 tbsp milk
pink salt to taste
Add the oil to a pan and sauté the onions until soft. Add the mushrooms, carrots, and pepper, and cook for about 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the rice, and mix well to make sure there are no chunks. Add the meat, soy sauce, and ketchup, and combine everything evenly. Add a lid and set aside. With white rice, we would usually use about a tbsp of ketchup. The hot dog water has ketchup that leaches out of the hot dogs.
Beat together the eggs, milk, and salt. In a hot pan, melt the butter and coat the pan. Pour the egg mixture and tilt the pan to coat the bottom. When the eggs are set and the top is a little runny, scoop the rice mixture onto a plate. Carefully transfer the egg from the pan to the plate, runny side down. Wrap the rice with the omelet by tucking the edges under the rice to form a football shape. My son forgot this step, lol. Garnish the top by drizzling more ketchup on top. Smiley face is optional; my son thought I needed it.
